NIR and IR Reflective thin film coatings on optical substrates for solar and IR radiation control

Heat reflectors are thin film coated optics that transmit high levels of the visible spectrum while reflecting a dominant portion of the near infrared (NIR) and IR spectrums. Dontech HeatShield™ brand heat reflectors minimize solar loading on displays and enclosures. HeatShield™ filters prolong the operation of LCDs in direct sunlight and can reduce power consumption used for ancillary cooling. Excessive thermal loading on an LCD will render the display unreadable until it cools. For example, an LCD may become isotropic (brown out) if exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods of time, as the rate at which the heat is absorbed by the display often exceeds its ability to dissipate this energy.

HeatShield™ filters also reduce the thermal loading from high intensity backlights on the LCD. When used in conjunction with ancillary and passive cooling, LCDs will function properly in many demanding environments. Applications for Dontech HeatShield™ filters include outdoor point-of-sale displays, military applications, portable electronics, mobile computers, and boating displays.

HeatShield™ IR Blocking filters are designed to reduce the thermal loading on optical enclosures used in direct sunlight applications including, marine, military, kiosk, outdoor signage applications.  They have been shown to provide up to 80% IR blocking efficiency compared to untreated optics.

Product Specifications

Optical Properties: Filters will appear neutral gray in color and depending on performance requirements, will have up to 85% photopic transmission. Additional protective, scratch, and abrasion resistant hard coatings are added to plastic filters. Antiglare hard coatings and antireflective coatings can be added to increase transmission by reducing visible reflections.

Performance: Dontech’s HeatShield™ technology is verified through a comparative test configuration design in order to measure the rate of temperature increase when the optical aperture is exposed to a high intensity, uniform radiant, broadband (i.e., visual though IR) source. Dontech HeatShield™ products lower heat transfer rate by 50% to 80% depending on the product utilized, as compared to untreated optical substrates.
